Pada pertengahan tahun 1947, sebuah belon Angkatan Udara Tentera Darat Amerika Syarikat jatuh terhempas di sebuah ladang ternak berdekatan Roswell, New Mexico.[1] Berikutan minat awal yang meluas terhadap "cakera terbang" yang terhempas, tentera AS menyatakan ia hanya sebuah belon cuaca yang biasa.[2] Minat kemudiannya surut sehingga lewat 1970-an, apabila ahli-ahli ufologi mula mempromosikan pelbagai teori konspirasi yang semakin terperinci, mendakwa satu atau lebih pesawat angkasa lepas makhluk asing telah membuat pendaratan kecemasan dan penumpang-penumpang luar bumi telah ditemui semula oleh tentera, yang kemudiannya terlibat dalam penyembunyian.
Pada 1990-an, tentera AS menerbitkan dua laporan mendedahkan sifat sebenar objek yang jatuh terhempas itu: sebuah belon pengawasan ujian nuklear daripada Projek Mogul. Meskipun begitu, kejadian Roswell terus menjadi minat dalam media popular, dan teori-teori konspirasi menyelubungi peristiwa ini berterusan. Roswell digambarkan "dakwaan UFO yang terkenal, paling disiasat menyeluruh dan dipaparkan palsu dengan teliti".[3]
