Serangkaian puting beliung yang merosakkan memberik kesan kepada Amerika Syarikat Tenggara pada hari Hari Easter Ahad dan Isnin, 12–13 April 2020. Beberapa orang bertanggungjawab memberitahu akan kecemasan tornado, termasuk yang pertama dikeluarkan oleh Perkhidmatan Cuaca Negara di Charleston, South Carolina. Garis badai besar terbentuk dan dijejaki melalui pertengahan Atlantik pada 13 April, mendorong banyak amaran dan pemerhatian puting beliung. Lima belas pemerhatian dihasilkan sepanjang peristiwa berlaku, dua daripadanya ditetapkan sebagai Particularly Dangerous Situations. 37 kematian yang dilaporkan,[4][5] ini adalah serangan paling maut sejak 2–3 Mac 2012, pada ketika itu 41 orang terbunuh.

Selama berminggu-minggu sepanjang bulan Mac dan hingga April, kawasan tekanan tinggi yang luas yang terbentuk di seluruh Amerika Syarikat Tenggara,[6] menyumbang kepada suhu panas yang tidak normal di banyak negara. Amerika Syarikat secara keseluruhan mengalami musim panas ketujuh belas yang paling panas, meneruskan corak yang berterusan sepanjang musim sejuk. Khususnya, banyak lokasi di sepanjang pantai AS dan Teluk Mexico menyaksikan suhu paling panas untuk bulan itu.[7] Cuaca yang tenang yang berkaitan dengan kawasan tekanan tinggi menyebabkan pemanasan pesat perairan Teluk Mexico ke nilai tertinggi dalam rekod moden—lebih besar daripada 2 °C (3.6 °F) melebihi purata pada tahun 1971–2010—serta pelembapan udara pada permukaan.[8] Peningkatan ketidakstabilan yang berkaitan dengan udara panas dan lembab yang tidak normal dari Teluk Mexico dikaitkan dengan peningkatan risiko cuaca buruk dan aktiviti puting beliung.[9]

Petunjuk pertama cuaca buruk yang teratur datang pada April 8, ketika Storm Prediction Center (SPC) menggariskan 15% kebarangkalian untuk cuaca buruk dalam 25 bt (40 km) titik dari Texas tengah ke arah timur ke Florida Panhandle dan timur Georgia yang berlaku pada 11–12 April.[10] Kawasan ancaman ini kemudian dikuatkan lagi dengan pengenalan risiko sederhana hari ke-3, iaitu keempat dari lima tahap ancaman, di seberang Louisiana timur laut melalui tengah Alabama pada April 10. [11] Berdasarkan sejarah, SPC mengeluarkan satu risiko sederhana hari ke-3 setiap tahun, dan separuh daripadanya sepanjang dekad sebelumnya kemudian ditingkatkan menjadi High risk, tahap ancaman tertinggi.[12] Pada hari-hari berikutnya, gelombang pendek peringkat pertengahan yang signifikan berkembang ke arah timur di seluruh Amerika Syarikat. Menjelang waktu subuh April 12, penyejukan peringkat pertengahan yang berkaitan dengan ciri itu meliputi Dataran Tinggi Edwards, Hill Country, dan sebahagian besar Texas tengah. Oleh itu, garis ribut petir yang teruk berkembang di sepanjang garis kering sementara perkembangan konvektif yang kuat terbentuk jauh ke timur.[13] Ribut petir ini pada awalnya diasingkan dari kebiasan tetapi tidak lama kemudian digabungkan menjadi sistem perolakan mesoskala ketika mereka menghadapi koridor udara panas yang meningkat mengalir ke utara, serta ricih angin yang sangat kuat.[14][15] Kompleks ribut ini berkembang di seluruh Louisiana utara hingga lewat pagi dan awal petang, menyumbang kepada banyak tanda-tanda serpihan puting beliung.[16] Satu puting beliung di Monroe dinilai sebagai kekuatan EF3.[17] Di hadapan garis, bahagian perenggan panas membantu pembentukan persekitaran yang sangat lembab, sangat tidak stabil, dan sangat rincih di seberang dan timur laut Louisiana dan sebahagian besar Mississippi.[18] Oleh itu, SPC mengeluarkan pemerhatian tornado situasi yang sangat berbahaya hingga larut malam.[19]

Pelancaran belon cuaca dari Jackson, Mississippi, pada jam 18:00 UTC mendedahkan adanya penukupan sonsang di seluruh wilayah. Had ini dijangka melemah di seluruh pusat Mississippi,[20] sementara peramal menyatakan lebih tidak pasti mengenai lanjutan usia di selatan Mississippi dan Louisiana.[21] Ketika kawasan kecil bertekanan rendah melintasi Mississippi barat laut menyebabkan angin permukaan berubah dari timur-tenggara, meningkatkan potensi angin puting beliung. Ketika sekumpulan badai melintasi pusat Mississippi menuju ke arah timur laut, ia mulai mengintensifkan dan mengembangkan ciri-ciri dengan ancaman angin tornado yang kuat.[22] Lebih jauh ke selatan, dua supersel yang berbeza berkembang dalam lingkungan di mana puting beliung yang panjang dikesan dan ditunggui, kedua-duanya menunjukkan putaran yang sangat kuat dan tanda-tanda serpihan yang berbeza.[23] Berdasarkan struktur ribut sebelumnya di lingkungan yang serupa, SPC menyatakan bahawa "ini adalah kejadian yang sangat jarang berlaku" dan dianggarkan angin 170–205 mph (274–330 km/j), selaras dengan puting beliung dengan intensiti EF4 atau EF5.[24][25][26] Setelah menjalankan tinjauan kerosakan, ahli meteorologi mengenal pasti dua angin puting beliung yang kuat dengan supersel pertama, satu yang membunuh tiga orang di barat laut Salem ke barat daya Bassfield dan yang kedua dari selatan Bassfield ke barat daya Pachuta, kedua-duanya dengan intensiti EF4.[27][28] Tornado EF3 dikenal pasti dengan supersel kedua.[29]

Sepanjang waktu petang, risiko cuaca buruk dan angin puting beliung beralih ke timur ke Alabama, dengan peredaran kepala tanda koma melintasi Alabama utara menyumbang kepada banyak puting beliung yang disahkan.[30] Ciri ini diteruskan ke Georgia barat laut, mengekalkan strukturnya yang jelas walaupun persekitarannya tidak stabil.[31] Tornado EF2 mengukir jalan dari barat laut Chatsworth, Georgia ke tenggara Benton, Tennessee, meragut tujuh nyawa. Sementara peningkatan aktiviti ribut tempatan berlaku dalam rangkaian perolakan yang luas di pusat Alabama,[32] titik embun meningkat setelah terjadinya kompleks badai sebelumnya di seluruh utara Georgia dan tenggara Tennessee, meningkatkan lagi nilai ketidakstabilan dengan adanya ricih angin yang sangat kuat.[33] Angin tornado EF3 membunuh dua orang di pinggir Chattanooga, Tennessee.[34] Garis badai praperenggan beralih ke timur ke dalam Georgia timur dan Carolinas semalaman. Tornado EF3 disahkan di selatan Thomaston ke barat laut Redbone di Georgia.[35] Tornado EF3 kedua dari tenggara-barat Westminster ke barat Central di Carolina Selatan mengorbankan satu orang.[36] Namun EF3 lain dari timur-timur laut Elko ke barat daya St Matthews di Carolina Selatan menyebabkan dua lagi kematian.[37] Untuk tempoh 24 jam yang berakhir pada pukul 12:00 UTC April 13, Perkhidmatan Cuaca Nasional mengeluarkan 141 amaran angin puting beliung, yang paling banyak dalam satu hari sejak serangan puting beliung pada 2–3 Mac 2012.[38] Sepanjang waktu pagi April 13, garis ribut ribut petir berterusan ke arah timur dan bertambah kuat memandangkan pemanasan sedikit pada waktu siang, aliran kelembapan yang kaya, dan ricih angin tahap rendah yang kuat.[39] SPC telah menggariskan peningkatan risiko cuaca teruk di sepanjang Pantai Timur AS dari utara Georgia tenggara hingga ke utara Virginia.[40] Angin dan puting beliung yang merosakkan dicatatkan sepanjang hari, termasuk 12 angin puting beliung di Carolina Utara, serangan satu hari terbesar keenam yang tercatat di negeri ini sejak 1950.[41]

Northwest of Darbun, two frame homes were completely leveled, one of which was removed off its foundation. A large hardwood tree was uprooted and lofted several feet in this area. One home was properly constructed while the other lacked proper anchor bolts. Based on this, engineers and forensic surveyors concluded the damage was of EF4 intensity. Continuing northeast, the tornado rolled a mobile home and tore the roof off a brick home. Two fatalities occurred in the county. Crossing into Lawrence County, it caused extensive tree damage with numerous hardwood and softwood trees snapped or uprooted. Near Tynes Ainsworth Road, a mobile home was completely destroyed; both occupants died. Extensive damage to trees continued across Marion and Jefferson Davis Counties and the tornado ultimately dissipated to the southwest of Bassfield. [46]

Most of the roof was ripped off a house, a mobile home was shifted 6–10 ka (1.8–3.0 m) off its foundation, and another manufactured home was demolished. A large portion of the roof was torn from a business that also had its exterior wall collapsed. Numerous trees were snapped or uprooted, some of which fell on homes and one of which landed on a church. [62]
