Debat adalah kaedah rasmi berinteraksi mewakili perbincangan. Debat adalah bentuk lebih luas bagi perbincangan berbanding perbincangan secara logik, kerana ia merangkumi pujukan yang memberi penekanan kepada tindak balas emosi dari pendengar, dan peraturan yang membolehkan mereka berbincang dan memutuskan mengenai perbezaan, dalam rangka kerja yang menentukan bagaimana mereka berinteraksi.

Debat tidak rasmi adalah kejadian normal, tetapi kualiti dan kedalaman debat meningkat dengan pengetahuan dan kemahiran pesertanya sebagai pedebat. Badan perwakilan seperti parlimen, badan perundangan (legislative assemblies) dan pelbagai jenis mesyuarat terbabit dalam perdebatan. Keputusan debat mungkin ditentukan oleh undi pendengar, oleh juri, hakim atau gabungan antaranya. Perdebatan rasmi antara calon bagi jawatan dilantik, seperti wakil rakyat dan senator, adalah biasa dalam sistem demokrasi Malaysia.
