Thrasher ialah sebuah majalah papan luncur yang diasaskan pada Januari 1981 oleh Eric Swenson dan Fausto Vitello, serta diterbitkan oleh High Speed Productions, Inc. dan beribu pejabat di San Francisco, Amerika Syarikat.[3] Majalah ini sebahagian besarnya mengandungi rencana berkaitan papan luncur dan muzik, fotografi, serta ulasan taman luncur. Majalah ini juga memiliki laman web, yang memiliki sejumlah segmen, antara lain dengan nama "Firing Line" dan "Hall of Meat", serta kedai dalam talian, koleksi video, rancangan radio, dan forum untuk pengguna yang mendaftar.[4] Syarikat ini juga memiliki dan mengendalikan kemudahan papan luncur Double Rock serta sebuah kedai papan luncur di San Francisco bernama 66 6th.

Thrasher diasaskan pada 1981 oleh Fausto Vitello dan Eric Swenson, terutamanya untuk mempromosikan syarikat papan luncur miliknya, Independent Truck Company.[3] Penyunting pertama majalah ini Ialah Kevin Thatcher. Pada tahun 1993, Jake Phelps dilantik sebagai penyunting baru majalah ini.[5] Pada tahun 1999, majalah ini menjadi penaja sebuah permainan PlayStation bernama Thrasher Presents Skate and Destroy.[6] Anak Vitello, Tony, mengambil alih syarikat ini selepas bapanya meninggal dunia pada tahun 2006[7] dan Swenson bunuh diri pada tahun 2011.[3] Pada 14 Mac 2019, penyunting Jake Phelps juga meninggal dunia.[8][9]

Gelaran "Skater of the Year" diberikan setiap setahun sekali oleh majalah Thrasher. Tradisi ini bermula pada tahun 1990, dan sehingga kini tetap menjadi salah satu anugerah paling berprestij dalam budaya papan luncur sedunia. Gelaran ini hanya diberikan pada seorang pemain papan luncur setiap tahun oleh penyunting Thrasher. Hanya Chris Cole dan Danny Way yang pernah menerima anugerah ini sebanyak dua kali.

King of the Road[sunting | sunting sumber]

Rencana utama: King of the Road

Pada tahun 2003, Thrasher memulakan pertandingan papan luncur King of the Road (KOTR). Semasa pertandingan ini, sekumpulan pemain papan luncur profesional yang telah diundang sebelumnya diberi sebuah buku yang mengandungi banyak permainan. Markah akan diberikan apabila permainan dapat diselesaikan. Pasukan itu diberi tempoh dua minggu untuk menjelajah seluruh Amerika Syarikat guna menyelesaikan cabaran sebanyak mungkin.

KOTR diadakan setiap setahun sekali, kecuali pada tahun 2008 dan 2009. Pada tahun 2011, Thrasher dan Converse mengadakan pertandingan serupa di China, dengan diikuti oleh empat pengeluar papan luncur terbesar di China.[21]

Skate Rock[sunting | sunting sumber]

Thrasher melancarkan soro kompilasi muzik bernama "Skate Rock" di bawah label High Speed Productions. Keluaran pertama ialah pada tahun 1983, dengan Volume One, dan dilanjutkan hingga Volume Seven pada tahun 1989. Siri ini mula menampilkan kumpulan punk rock California, termasuk kumpulan yang disertai oleh para pemain papan luncur, seperti Steve Caballero, Tony Alva, dan Klaus Grabke di bawah nama Eight Dayz.

Dari tujuh jilid Skate Rock, semua jilid diterbitkan sebagai sebuah kaset yang tersedia melalui Thrasher Magazine. Beberapa jilidnjuga tersedia sebagai rakaman vinil.
