We may consider Singapore, on its little island, to bethe capital of the whole region of British Malaya. Ofwhat does British Malaya consist ? In the first place,in addition to Singapore, there are the British Possessionson the western side of the Malay Peninsula. In thenorth we have the island of Penang, with ProvinceWellesley on the mainland opposite; further south,but grouped with Penang for administrative purposes,are the Dindings and the island of Pangkor ; furthersouth still is the territory of Malacca. In the middle is a group of four states, Perak,Selangor, Negri Sembilan and Pahang, which werefederated in 1895 and are now known as the FederatedMalay States. On the northern boundary are Kelantan.Trengganu, Kedah and the little state of Perlis ; theseby agreement with Siam. in 1909, were transferred fromSiamese suzerainty to the protection of Britain.
