Koronavirus sindrom pernafasan akut teruk (SARS-CoV atau SARS-CoV-1)[2] merupakan baka virus yang menyebabkan sindrom pernafasan akut teruk (SARS).[3] Ia merupakan satu menyelubungi, positif-rasa, tunggal terkandas virus RNA yang menjangkiti sel-sel epitelium dalam paru-paru.[4] Virus memasuki sel inang dengan mengikat reseptor ACE2.[5] Ia menjangkiti manusia, kelawar, dan musang sawit.[6][7]
Pada 16 April 2003, berikutan wabak SARS di Asia dan kes sekunder di tempat lain di dunia, Pertubuhan Kesihatan Sedunia (WHO) mengeluarkan kenyataan akhbar yang menyatakan bahawa koronavirus yang dikenal pasti oleh sebilangan makmal ialah penyebab rasmi SARS. Pusat Kawalan dan Pencegahan Penyakit (CDC) di Amerika Syarikat dan Makmal Mikrobiologi Kebangsaan (NML) di Kanada mengenal pasti genom SARS-CoV pada April 2003.[8][9] Para saintis di Universiti Erasmus di Rotterdam, Belanda menunjukkan bahawa koronavirus SARS memenuhi postulat Koch sehingga mengesahkannya sebagai agen penyebab. Dalam eksperimen tersebut, kera yang dijangkiti virus mengalami gejala yang sama dengan mangsa SARS manusia.[10]
Pandemik koronavirus 2019-2020 penyakit koronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) menunjukkan banyak persamaan dengan wabak SARS, dengan agen virus yang dikenal pasti sebagai koronavirus sindrom pernafasan akut teruk 2 (SARS-CoV-2), namun satu lagi jenis Koronavirus berkaitan sindrom pernafasan akut teruk ( SARSr-CoV ). SARS-CoV-1 ialah salah satu daripada tujuh koronavirus yang diketahui menjangkiti manusia, termasuk Human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E), Human coronavirus NL63 ( HCoV-NL63 ), koronavirus manusia OC43 (HCoV-OC43), Human coronavirus HKU1 (HCoV-HK), Koronavirus berkaitan dengan sindrom pernafasan Timur Tengah (MERS-CoV), dan SARS-CoV-2.

SARS-CoV primarily infects epithelial cells within the lung. The virus is capable of entering macrophages and dendritic cells but only leads to an abortive infection [87,88].

Most notably, horseshoe bats were found to be the reservoir of SARS-like CoVs, while palm civet cats are considered to be the intermediate host for SARS-CoVs [43,44,45].
