The London School of Economics and Political Science, secara umum dirujuk sebagai London School of Economics atau LSE sahaja, adalah sebuah universiti penyelidikan awam di London, England, dan salah satu kolej juzuk University of London.

Ditubuh pada 1895,[7] LSE memasuki Universiti London pada 1900 sebagai Fakulti Ekonomi, dan mula mengeluarkan ijazahnya pada 1902. Hari ia menjadi sebuah kolej juzuk pakar satu fakulti di Universiti, hanya satu-satunya institusi sedemikian di Britain. Ia menjelaskan dirinya sebagai "institusi sains kemasyarakatan utama untuk pengajaran dan penyelidikan".[8] Ia memiliki sekitar 8,700 pelajar sepenuh masa dan 1,300 kakitangan akademik.[9]

LSE adalah anggota Kumpulan Russell,[10] European University Association,[11] Association of Commonwealth Universities, Community of European Management Schools and International Companies,[12] The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs[13] dan Universities UK.[14] Ia membentuk sebahagian Golden Triangle universiti-universiti British.

London School of Economics telah didirikan pada 1895[15] by Beatrice and Sidney Webb,[16] terdahulunya didana dengan pewasiatan lebih kurang £10,000[17][18] dari estate Henry Hunt Hutchinson. Hutchinson, seorang peguam[17] dan ahli Fabian Society,[19][20] meninggalkan wang dalam amanah, untuk diletakkan "terhadap memajukan barang-barang [The Fabian Society]nya dalam mana-mana cara mereka [ pemegang amanah ] menganggap advisable".[20] Kelima-lima pemegang amanah adalah Sidney Webb, Edward Pease, Constance Hutchinson, William de Mattos dan William Clark.[17]

Rakaman LSE bahawa cadangan untuk menubuhkan skeolah telah ditanggap sewaktu mesyuarat sarapan pagi pada 4 Ogos 1894, di antara keluarga Webb, Graham Wallas dan George Bernard Shaw.[15] Cadangan ini telah diterima oleh para pemegang amanah pada Februari 1895[20] dan LSE menjalankan kelas-kelas pertamanya pada bulan Oktober tahun itu, dalam bilik-bilik di 9 John Street, Adelphi,[21] in the City of Westminster.

Sekolah ini mengikut masuk Universiti London yang persekutuan pada 1900, menjadi Fakulti Ekonomi universiti ini dan menganugerahkan sarjana-sarjana London dari 1902.[21] Mengembang secara pantas pada tahun-tahun berikutnya, sekolah ini pindah pada terdahulunya di 10 Adelphi Terrace yang berhampiran, kemudina ke Clare Market dan Houghton Street. Batu dasar Old Building, di Houghton Street, diletakkan oleh King George V pada 1920;[15] bangunan ini dibuka pada 1922.

Sewaktu Perang Dunia II, School pindah dari London ke Cambridge, menduduki bangunan-banugnan yang milik Peterhouse.[22]

Jata sekolah,[23] termasuk cogan kata dan penaung beaver, telah digunakan pada Februari 1922,[24] dengan cadangan suatu jawatankuasa dua belas, termasuk lapan pelajar, yang telah ditubuhkan untuk menyelidik hal ini.[25] Cogan kata Latin, "Rerum cognoscere causas", diambil dari GeorgicsVirgil. The LSE has a long list of notable alumni and staff, spanning the fields of scholarship covered by the school. Among them are fifteen Nobel Prize winners[53] in Economics, Peace and Literature. Other notable former staff members include Anthony Giddens, Harold Laski, A. W. Philips, Karl Popper, Lionel Robbins, Susan Strange and Charles Webster. Clement Attlee, later a British Prime Minister, lectured at the school from 1912 to 1923.[54] and Mervyn King, the current Governor of the Bank of England, is a former professor of economics at the school.[55]

Many alumni of the school are notable figures, especially in the areas of politics, economics and finance. Indeed, with regards to the political arena, as of February 2009, around 34 past or present heads of state have studied or taught at LSE, and 28 members of the British House of Commons and 42 members of the House of Lords have either studied or taught at the school. In recent British politics, former LSE students include Virginia Bottomley, Yvette Cooper, Edwina Currie, Frank Dobson, Margaret Hodge and Ed Miliband. Internationally, John F Kennedy (former US President), Óscar Arias (Costa Rican President), Taro Aso[54] (Prime Minister of Japan), Queen Margrethe II of Denmark,[54] B. R. Ambedkar[54] (Father of Indian Constitution) K. R. Narayanan[54] (Ex-President of India) and Romano Prodi[54] (Italian Prime Minister and President of the European Commission) all studied at the LSE. Successful businesspeople who studied at the LSE include Delphine Arnault, Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Spiros Latsis, David Rockefeller, Maurice Saatchi and George Soros. Notable fictitious alumni include President Josiah Bartlet from the the television series The West Wing and Andrew Bond, the father of Ian Fleming's James Bond.
