Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai was born on 19 May 1949 in Logar Province, Afghanistan, into a prominent Pashtun Ahmadzai family, and completed his early schooling in Kabul before going abroad as an exchange student to the United States; he earned his bachelor’s degree at the American University of Beirut in 1973, then won a scholarship to Columbia University in New York, where he completed a master’s and a PhD in anthropology with a doctoral thesis on Afghan society and state formation. Upon finishing his PhD in the early 1980s, he served as a university lecturer in anthropology and state building at several institutions including University of California, Berkeley and Johns Hopkins University in the United States, and briefly at Kabul University before and after his graduate studies. In 1991 he left academia to join the World Bank as lead anthropologist working on large development and institutional reform projects in many countries, and after the US-led overthrow of the Taliban in 2001 he returned to Afghanistan as a senior adviser to the UN, helped implement the Bonn Agreement, and served as Finance Minister (2002–2004), introducing reforms, a new currency, and systems to rebuild governance. He also served as Chancellor of Kabul University, co-founded the Institute for State Effectiveness, and authored work on state reconstruction. Ghani ran for president in 2009 and later in 2014, winning the presidency and serving as President of Afghanistan from 2014 until the Taliban takeover in August 2021, when he left the country as Kabul fell.
