James Byron Dean (8 Februari 1931 – 30 September 1955) merupakan pelakon Amerika Syarikat. Beliau dikenali menerusi filem Rebel Without a Cause (1955), East of Eden (1955) dan Giant (1956). Dean meninggal dunia akibat kemalangan kereta.[1] Dean menjadi pelakon pertama yang menerima pencalonan Anugerah Akademi untuk Pelakon Lelaki Terbaik setelah meninggal dunia untuk filem Giant.[2] Pada tahun 1999, American Film Institute meletakkan beliau ditempat ke-18 sebagai pelakon filem lelaki terbaik di era emas Hollywood dalam senarai AFI's 100 Years...100 Stars.[3]

Kehidupan awal[sunting | sunting sumber]

James Byron Dean dilahirkan pada 8 Februari 1931 di Marion, Indiana,[4] dan merupakan anak tunggal kepada Winton Dean (17 Januari 1908 – 21 Februari 1995) dan Mildred Marie Wilson (15 September 1910 – 14 Julai 1940). Beliau merupakan berdarah Inggeris dengan sedikit campuran darah Jerman, Ireland, Scotland dan Welsh. Enam tahun selepas bapanya meninggalkan kerja perladangan untuk menjadi juruteknik pergigian, Dean dan keluarganya telah berpindah ke Santa Monica, California. Beliau telah pergi ke Sekolah Awam Brentwood di Brentwood, Los Angeles, California, sebelum dipindahkan ke Sekolah Rendah McKinley.[5] Dean sangat rapat dengan ibunya. Menurut DeAngelis, ibunya merupakan "satu-satunya orang yang dapat memahami beliau".[6] Pada tahun 1938, ibunya mengalami sakit perut dan kehilangan berat badan. Ketika berusia sembilan tahun, ibu Dean meninggal dunia akibat barah rahim.[5]

Tidak mampu untuk menjada anaknya, bapa Dean telah menghantar beliau untuk tinggal bersama ibu dan bapa saudaranya, Ortense dan Marcus Winslow, di Fairmount, Indiana.[7][8] Semasa zaman remajanya, Dean mempunyai hubungan yangr rapat dengan pastor Rev. James DeWeerd, yang banyak mempengaruhi Dean terutama minatnya dalam laga lembu, lumba kereta dan teater.[9] Menurut Billy J. Harbin, Dean mempunyai "sebuah hubungan rapat dengan pastornya, yang bermula pada tahun senior sekolah tinggi dan bertahan bertahun lamanya".[10][11] Dakwaan hubungan seksual mereka telah dibangkitkan menerusi buku Boulevard of Broken Dreams: The Life, Times, and Legend of James Dean (1994) oleh Paul Alexander.[12] Pada tahun 2011, dilaporkan, Dean menceritakan kepada Elizabeth Taylor bahawa beliau pernah didera secara seksual oleh seorang ahli agama kira-kira dua tahun selepas kematian ibunya.[13] Laporan lain turut mendakwa bahawa beliau telah didera secara seksual oleh DeWeerd semasa kanak-kanak atau mempunyai hubungan seksual ketika Dean remaja.[11][12]

Dean merupakan pelajar popular di sekolahnya. Beliau bermain besbol, bola keranjang serta terlibat dalam pengajian drama dan bertanding pengucapan awam melalui Persatuan Forensik Sekolah Tinggi Indiana. Selamat tamat belajar di Sekolah Tinggi Fairmount pada Mei 1949,[14] beliau berpindah ke California bersama anjing peliharaannya, Max, untuk tinggal bersama bapa dan ibu tirinya. Beliau telah mendaftar masuk ke Kolej Santa Monica (SMC) untuk jurusan pra undang-undang. Beliau kemudiannya berpindah ke UCLA untuk satu semester[15] dan menukar kepada jurusan drama,[16] yang menyebabkan hubungannya dengan bapanya menjadi renggang. Semasa di UCLA, Dean dipilih untuk melakonkan watak sebagai Malcolm dalam Macbeth.[17] Dalam masa yang sama, beliau turut mula berlakon dalam bengkel James Whitmore. Pada Januari 1951, beliau menarik diri dari UCLA untuk menjadi pelakon sepenuh masa.[18][19]
