Bario ialah sebuah perkampungan Malaysia terletak di pertengahan Tanah Tinggi Kelabit di timur laut Sarawak, sangat dekat dengan sempadan antarabangsa dengan Kalimantan di Indonesia, dan 3280 kaki atas aras laut. Ia merupakan petempatan utama di Tanah Tinggi Kelabit. Terdapat penerbangan kerap antara Lapangan Terbang Bario dan Ba'kelalan, Marudi dan Miri.

Rakyat[sunting | sunting sumber]

Orang Kelabit, lebih kurang 5000 orang, merupakan antara kaum terkecil di Sarawak. Seperti komuniti asli lain di Sarawak, orang Kelabit tinggal di rumah panjang di tanah tinggi. Bagaimanapun, kerana faktor ekonomi dan sosial, ramai telah berhijrah untuk tinggal di bandar sejak 20 tahun lalu. Ia dianggarkan terdapat lebih kurang 1200 orang Kelabit masih bertetap di tanah tinggi.

Seabad lalu, orang Kelabit terlibatkan dalam pemburuan kepala, bukan untuk tujuan upacara tetapi untuk membuktikan keberanian seseorang dan untuk mengenakan musuh. Walaubagaimanapun, things have changed. Today among other things, the Kelabits are well-known for their friendliness and hospitality. They embraced Christianity during the 1940s through the influence of Guru Paul, also known as Nimang Tepun.

In the year 1946, the first school was opened by Tom Harrison, who lived with the Kelabits for two years after the Second World War. In the year 2001, the Bario community was named as one of the Top Seven Intelligent Communities by World Teleport Association.

The Kelabit Highlands is tucked in the north eastern of Sarawak and is very close to the international border between Kalimantan and Sarawak. Bario is located on the Kelabit Highlands, 3280 feet above sea level. It is the unofficial capital of the Kelabit Highlands. All roads lead to Bario. Due to geographical barrier, this wonderful place is isolated from the rest of the world.

Infrastructure and facilities[sunting | sunting sumber]

Despite its remoteness, there are many infrastructures such as an airport, telecentre for internet access and computer services, schools, churches, clinic, police station and shops.

The people[sunting | sunting sumber]

The Kelabit, at approximately 5000 people, is one of the smallest ethnic groups in Sarawak... Like many other indigenous communities in Sarawak, the Kelabit live in longhouses on the highlands. However, due to economic and social factors, many have migrated to live in urban areas over the last 20 years. It is estimated that roughly only 1200 Kelabit are still living on the highlands.

Orang Kelabit termasuk peguam, doktor, ahli politik dan profesional. Orang Kelabit berpencapaian tinggi, sangat terajar dan orang yang cerah! Contohnya, pada pertengahan sembilan puluhan, ketua jabatan perundangan untuk semua syarikat minyak yang penting yang dijalankan di Malaysia merupakan orang Kelabit.

Orang Kelabit menutur bahasa mereka yang dipanggil "Bahasa Kelabit". Kini, kebanyakan mereka telah belajar untuk bertutur Bahasa Inggeris dan Melayu.

Tanaman[sunting | sunting sumber]

Aktiviti ekonomi utama komuniti ini ialah penanaman, terutamanya memajukan Padi Bario. Iklim sejuk pada purata 20°C membolehkan penduduk untuk menyemai buah sitrus selain padi. Bario juga terkenal untuk garam buatan Bario dan berkalium tingginya dan buah nanas Bario yang menyegarkan.
