Yusof Gajah[sunting sumber]

Yusof Gajah whose full name is Mohd Yusof Gajah was born on 10th February 1954 in Johol, Negeri Sembilan. He is an artist, an illustrator and a gallery owner. He is known as the pioneer of Malaysia’s ‘naive art’, featuring elephant as his main element. He was originally nicknamed Yusof Gajah by his friends while he was at Anak Alam to differentiate between him and another artist at the time named Yusof Othman. However this nickname stuck as Yusof Gajah found it fitting with his love for using elephant in his artwork. He was also called ‘the elephant man of art’.

Mr. Yusof is the pioneer of Malaysia’s naive art - a form of art not bound by formalities such as rules of shapes and form, resulting in artistic impressions of what the author feels about the object rather than depicting the object as it is. Naive art is best seen in children’s art as children are not aware of art elements drawing to their naïve content. Wariscan.com stated that Yusof was first exposed to art while schooling in Singapore during the 1960s, he was around six year old at that time. There he was introduced to painting mediums and various legendary artistes. Then at 18, his family sent him to Indonesia to pursue studies in agriculture, however he changed schools because he was more into art. Thus in 1972, Yusof registered with Sekolah Seni Rupa Indonesia, and then furthered his studies at Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia (ASRI) in 1975. Both schools are located in Jogkajarta, Indonesia.

Yusof married his wife Zakiah Md Isa and they were blessed with three children, Nuryusniza, Abdul Aziz and Muhammad Hasbullah. Two of his children are artists while his youngest son is showing interest in writing. He has exhibited in Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, Korea, Czechoslovakia, Thailand, New Zealand, Norway and Sweden.

In 1975 upon returning from Indonesia, he joined Anak Alam, a group of artists, poets and artistic personalities. He met his wife there. He then worked as an art master in Sabah for five years before the political climate ended his career. So he returned to Negeri Sembilan and started self a reflexology business. They made enough money to move the whole family to Kuala Lumpur and start his career as an artist.

In Kuala Lumpur he started painting for a prominent client who introduced him to others and he was soon profiting from painting. Then he was given the opportunity to open a gallery at the Craft Complex in Kuala Lumpur and his wife became his promoter. They were managing well on a steady income until some stranger slashed Yusof’s painting at his shop. He saw the incident as a sign to move on to somewhere else. Soon he opened his own gallery and a few more exhibition space around KL.

The painter received many awards in his years in fine art and among them is the Children's Literature Accolade, during the The Festival Sastera Kanak-kanak 2015 in Kuala Lumpur. He also received the Best Children’s Book Illustration from the National Book Council of Malaysia and the Noma Concurs GP Awards (ACCU) in Tokyo, Japan for his book ‘Gajah Sebenar’, according to afcc.com.

In a video via negaraku.com he said that his biggest achievement was starting the naïve art movement a decade ago. His art adorns the wall, children’s books, and much more. His elephants are not ordinary illustratipns. For example his ‘Mother & Child’ book depicts elephants as a metaphor for human behaviours which are not that different from animals.

The mother elephant uses her trunk to play with the child, teach it to write and draw as preparation for the real world. He demonstrated via his books how parents are supposed to take care of their and not abandoning or abusing them.
