Sukan Olimpik 2004 atau secara rasminya Games of the XXVIII Olympiad diadakan di Athens, Greece dari 13 Ogos hingga 29 Ogos, 2004. 10,625 atlet menyertai,[1] some 600 lebih daripada jangkaan, diiringi oleh 5,501 pegawai pasukan dari 201 negara.[1] Athens 2004 marked kali pertama sejak Olimpik Atlanta 1996 bahawa semua negara dengan Jawatankuasa Olimpik Antarabangsa hadir. Terdapat 301 acara pingat dalam 28 acara sukan berbeza.[1]

Maskot [sunting]
Sejak Olimpik Musim Sejuk 1968 di Grenoble, Perancis ia telah menjadi tradisi untuk mempunyai maskot untuk temasya; untuk 2004, maskot rasmi merupakan kakak dan abang, Athiná dan Phévos (disebut dalam Greek, Athina and Fivos), dinamakan selepas Athena, the goddess of wisdom, strategy and war, dan Phoebus, the god of light and music, masing-masing. Mereka diinsipirasikan oleh ancient daidala dimana merupakan patung yang mempunyai rangkaian keagamaan serta sebagai patung.

Untuk kali pertama, penyiar utama dibenarkan untuk serve liputan video Olimpik melalui Internet, asalkan mereka mengehadkan perkhidmatan geografi, untuk melindungi kontrak-kontrak penyiaran di kawasan lain. Misalnya, BBC membuat liputan secara langsung yang lengkap kepada pelanggan-pelanggan Internet laju UK dengan percuma; para pelanggan Amerika Syarikat hanya berupaya menerima siaran tertangguh.[2]
The International Olympic Committee forbade Olympic athletes, as well as coaches, support personnel and other officials, from setting up specialized weblogs and/or other websites for covering their personal perspective of the games. They were not allowed to post audio, video, or photos that they had taken. An exception was made if an athlete already has a personal website that was not set up specifically for the Games.[3]
NBC melancarkan laman web Olimpik tersendiri, NBCOlympics.com. Tertumpu dalam liputan televisyen temasya tersebut, ia did provide klip video, pungutan pingat, keputusan secara langsung. Its main purpose, however, was to provide a schedule of what sports were on the many stations of NBC Universal. The games were on TV 24 hours a day on one network or another.
